Trying my hand at a "stack n' whack". I have completed 3 squares so far.  Anxious to complete a quilt. Want to try my hand at actually free-hand quilting. Does anyone know or have any experience with John Flynn's frame system? (flynnquilt.com)

Hi Dana

I have built myself something similar to John Flynn’s frame system and it does the job, it's basic stuff but very easy to use, at least I can do stippling stitch on my quilts. But, I’m tempted to buy this one:

I have contacted the guy and its relatively cheap to get it delivered here in UK.

I have one but have moved on. My opinion is that a good table with a dorp in insert that makes you machine surface level with the table surface works best. The other key ingredient is the longest arm on amachine that you can get.

David Taylor uses a HandiQuilter 16 stationary machine on a HQ table and you can't argue with the quality of his quilting.

No experience with the John Flynn system Dana, but have seen them in use, and they do take up a lot of space. by the time you have enough to move the frame to your left and then to your right, you just as well have something like Alex mentioned above. About that Alex, it looks very much like the older handi-quilter frame. I have the second generation handi-quilter frame, and really like it. I purchased a Brother Nouvelle 1500s so I could have a larger quilting space, and it works great. I could have also used my home machine if I chose.

Bought a Flynn frame years ago. Tried to make it work, but the small opening on my sewing machine made it not worth the time and trouble. If you do HAND quilting, I'd imagine it would be very good. Glad I got it at a yard sale. only cost me 5 bucks, wood and all.

An update. I found a Flynn system on ebay and got it fairly cheap. I am in the process of trying it, but it looks like it will only work for small projects, like table runners and baby quilts.
